What’s going on here then?

Well, after a successful trip last year, making it to Mongolia in a Micra, we’re off again.   More Borders, bandits, break-downs and badventure (sorry).  This year, it’s got to be better so we’ve had to add a bit more challenge:

1. The route - it’s nuts - check out the route page.  15,000 miles.

2. The car - it’s a Lada - no, seriously.

3. The charity - Last year, we raised over €3500 for two fantastic charities, we’re going to aim a lot higher this year.

15,000 miles in a Lada, across Europe to Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazashstan, Russia and Mongolia, and then we’ll drive home.

How & When?

We’ll be leaving Cork on the 3rd of July for 3months of driving to get us almost halfway round the world and then back.  The route covers most of Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Russia and then for a change on the way home, we’ll go so far north that we’ll be inside the Arctic circle.  All in a car you’d be ashamed to be seen going to the shops in (and to be fair, it probably wouldn’t get you there anyway).  This beast was made in the good old days of the USSR, when men were men and quality control was just for capitalists.

Why are we doing this?

Our chosen charity this year is save the children (www.savethechildren.mn).

Save the Children is the worlds largest independent organisation for children. Helping children in over 110 countries. These guys do great work in Mongolia, fighting for children who suffer from poverty disease, injustice and
Violence. Street children in the capital of Mongolia are particularly vunerable. They spend the harsh winters (sometimes as cold as -50 degrees C) under the streets, surviving by staying close to the steam pipes that supply the heating of apartment blocks and buildings around the city. Save the Children provide the education and protection that they need. For more info, see our charity page.
